Repeater Support Information
I have put together this page in an effort to try to provide some insight into the real cost of keeping the W6FM system on the air.
First let me start out by saying that the W6FM Repeater is an “open” system and is not affiliated with any clubs or organizations. We do not require any dues or donations in order to use the repeater system. That includes using the IRLP system.
Because we are not affiliated with any club we do not have membership dues revenue to help pay the cost of keeping the system on the air. Over the years the system has been supported by the generous voluntary donations of our users, and believe me it is appreciated. The rent alone is $50 per month or $600 annually. Up to now, all of the donations that we have received have gone toward paying the rent. If there ever comes a time when we receive more donations than that required to cover the rent, some of the money will be used to help cover the other costs of keeping the system on the air.
In the past those “other” costs have amounted to considerably more than the rent. For example, the cost of replacing two of the antennas was about $1000, and repairing the control system about $200. The addition of the IRLP System was another $1000 for a dedicated computer, an ethernet network switch, an ethernet router, a link radio and antenna, and the required software package and parts kit from Dave Cameron, VE7LTD, the IRLP Guru. Then there was the cost of replacing the hard drive that failed in the IRLP computer. There are the annual dues to NARCC for the frequency coordination of the system, a monthly phone bill, monthly cost for an upgraded internet service to accommodate the IRLP system, and the cost of the domain name registration for this web page, etc., etc., etc.
To brag just a little, it is just simply a fact that the W6FM repeater is one of the best around, and it didn't get that way by accident. It has taken a lot of time, money, and work to get it like it is and keep it that way.
Please don't misunderstand, I am not complaining, I am just filling you in on some of the costs “besides the obvious” that most of you would not have any idea about if I didn't tell you. Believe me, building and keeping the system going is a labor of love but it does get a bit expensive at times and I am not above accepting a helping hand from the users now and then. I want the system to be the best it can be so you can get the maximum benefit from using it.
Please understand that I do not expect every user to donate. I would feel bad if someone who really can't afford to send a donation felt obligated to send me one. That's not in the spirit of my intentions nor is it in the spirit of an open system. Those who do not donate are just as welcome on the system as those who do.
Having said all of that, if you feel that you would like to lighten the load on the system owner a little, and you can afford to support the system, a donation would be greatly appreciated.
